W1 - a gutsy fight!

Lent Bumps (Friday)

We were faced with terrible conditions today as we pushed off from the boathouse. But we were determined not to let it get to us. Today was our race, we would push into Peterhouse, give them a scare, and get away from Magdalene.

The row up was a little rocky probably due to the bad weather. The waves on the reach threw our first start off a little but we got it back for the second start by the plough which was up to our usual fantastic standard.

We got to the start and spun. We were psyched up for a tough one, we knew Magdalene were fast but we wanted to give them a run for their money!

We were efficiently pushed out despite conditions and when the gun sounded we took off super quick and left Magdalene behind. The start was neat and powerful and we settled comfortably into a rhythm we reckoned we could hold for the course.

As we came under the motorway bridge Emily called for a technical re-build and the crew responded fantastically. Magdalene fell back to about 2 lengths and we thought we had broken them. Then we got a whistle on Peterhouse! Excitement but no panic, we kept our heads and kept pushing but couldn't quite turn it into two. Our bank party later told us we were so close to 1/2 a length but didn't quite get there.

As we came round Grassy, Magdalene suddenly began to come back into the race! Our line was good, better than theirs, and we put in a push out of the corner; but they were coming up so fast! I signalled for the destroy and Emily called it. The pressure went up and the boat speed increased but unfortunately we were bumped just before Ditton corner.

Today was by far our best rowing of the term. We may have been caught but we didn't make it easy for Magdalene! It felt like everyone gave everything today, and it felt a lot more in control, which I would put down to us gaining bumps experience with every day! We've got enough left for a final charge tomorrow and we know we can row over at the head of the W2 division and come back into the 1st division to give Magdalene a fright!

Go Selwyn ladies!!
